December 25th, 2009 Angela Jones No comments

There are definitely a lot of people who adore the sun for its ability to give them a better skin colour. When you think about this, it is quite obvious, that these people are looking for ways that they can acquire a tanned skin.

The methods that some people employ in order to get a suntanned skin consist of getting a tan outdoors from the sun itself, but also, tanning beds, tanning booths, spray on tanners, self tanning lotions and tanning pills. In part, the decision which of these methods you choose, depends on the length of time that you can give up to get a perfect tan.

Some people go for tanning pills, but in reality, they work a little differently from the other, more usual methods. For example, lotions work by spreading some of the liquid, usually oil based, on different parts of your body. It is your choice which parts of you, you want to change the colour of. However, tanning pills need to be taken orally and so will affect the whole of your body. Furthermore, you will have to choose which tanning pills to use, because, unlike lotions, if you use tanning pills, you will have fewer colour choices.

You should be well aware of this important point, because you will need to choose a depth of tan that does not differ too unflatteringly with the colour of other parts of your body like your hair, eyes, lips, etc. You can buy these tanning pills in the same shops as you buy your other tanning supplies.

You must however consult the label to find out if there are any precautions you will need to take. For example, one of the most important precautions that you can take, is to find out if you might have an allergic reaction to the tanning pills.

Besides this though, you might also want to find out exactly what all the media hype over tanning pills is all about. This research will also help you to decide which of the different tanning pills on the market is the right one for you. In addition, if you look on the Internet, you will get the statistics on the number of people who have developed problems after using these tablets. At this point in time, you will discover that there are three firm favourites when it comes to tanning pills.

These tanning pills are called EluSun, Deep Tan and Mayan Secrets. The main ingredient for two of these makes is carerenoids. This substance causes the top layer of skin to turn a pinkish colour. The colour might darken over time, but it is necessary for you to keep taking these pills for as long as you require the tan.

The main drawback of tanning pills is that these pills are just as dangerous to your health as sun bathing on the beach for hours at a time. Once you have found out all the details you can, you will need to make your mind up whether taking tanning pills is worth the risk to your health, just to have bronzed skin colour.

December 20th, 2009 Marion Rose Jones No comments

The process you propose to employ for tanning has to be investigated with some attention. This is due to the many diverse methods, from which you can obtain a tan. Nevertheless, you will have to ensure that you are choosing the right tanning equipment for the right tanning process.

Indoor tanning is obviously a different matter and so there are also different types of tanning equipment to take into consideration. These will differ depending on the variety of tanning that you are going to carry out. For example, you will find that tanning lotion requires tissues or towels to wipe up any spills, water and soap to remove excess tanning lotion. This is sufficient for self-tanning sprays. In this case, the most important item in your tanning session is the tanning lotion that you have chosen to use. This is perhaps the minimum amount of tanning equipment that you will need although it really is the bare minimum.

Self-Tanning Sprays

December 3rd, 2009 Owen Jones No comments

The tanned appearance is both fashionable and all the rage more now than at any time for many years; people like the brownish glow of their skin as it makes them feel fashionable and self-confident. However, at the same time, sun bathing is less and less advisable because of the rise in the quantity of skin cancer injuries. Therefore, substitutes to it have and still are being developed. Artificial tanning using tanning beds or sunless tanning by synthetic methods such as body lotions, creams, gels or self tanning spray are broadly obtainable.

Although the most advanced method of getting a tan is the use of a tanning bed or tanning booth, not everybody can afford to buy their own machine or go to a salon four times a month in order to have their tan refreshened, so the do-it-yourself solutions have become more and more prevalent.

A self tanning spray is a cosmetic product frequently containing DHA that can be employed at home as a sunless tanning solution. DHA is a chemical that causes a reaction with the skin’s amino acids, which in turn causes the turning of the top layer of skin a brownish colour. The outcome of a self tanning spray lasts for about six or eight days, if you are wise not to take too long in the shower, if you shun using too a harsh soap and if you do not rub yourself too hard with the towel.

Self tanning is not without a number of challenges and so, while it is less expensive than treatment in a commercial tanning salon, it is also more tricky to get a pleasing outcome. It is more difficult to get an even tan when using a self tanning spray. The coloring solution has to be atomized in a thin film with great care not to overlap too much. Overlapping leads to darker tan shades on some body areas.

Therefore, another disadvantage of the self tanning spray is that you may require another person’s help for the procedure. The back for example is very tricky to spray unless there is someone to assist you. The same difficulty presents itself for the back of the legs, the nape of the neck and the bottom. If you ask a friend to help you with the tanning, it will make the process a lot easier.

You have got to be especially careful to protect your eyes, your lips, ears and other sensitive body parts. It is also possible to stain your nails and palms when using a self tanning spray. You could eradicate this problem by using gloves or wet wipes whenever essential so as not to allow the tanning agent to dry on the palms or your hands or your nails.

Then, last but not least, do not spray too much liquid on your body, because the result may be an unusual orange glow or a rather uneven tan. Although many people frequently use these cans of self tanning spray in its various forms, there is no question about it that they are a lower quality solution when compared to the top-quality, but more expensive tanning bed or tanning booth.

Using Tanning Booths

November 21st, 2009 Angela Jones No comments

It is a well-known fact of life that a lot of people like to have a wonderful Hollywood tan just as if they had been soaking up the sun on a private beach in Malibu. You would be able to get an all over tan with no clothes or strings to restrict the tanning process on your concealed beach. But secret beaches do not come cheap, do they? Buying a tanning booth is one the several different ways that you can use to get the all over tan that you require.

These tanning booths are quite similar in design to the tanning booths which are very popular in commercial tanning salons. As with tanning beds, there are many brands of tanning booths on the market for both commercial and domestic tanning bed equipment. So, you will need to investigate into these different tanning booth systems meticulously in order to find one that suits you and your budget. There are nevertheless a few notes of caution that you should bear in mind when selecting your tanning booth.

When you are using tanning booths, you will notice that these booths use very high temperature ultra violet lights to quickly bring about the alterations your skin will have to go through in a tanning session in order to get bronzed. Just as when using tanning beds, you will have to use some protective eye wear when in the tanning booths. These goggles will shield your eyes from becoming damaged by the powerful, but injurious ultra violet rays.

On the other hand, if these ultra violet rays are quite so dangerous, why do people desire to subject themselves to such lengthy periods in tanning booths? Well, the response is really quite plain, it is just because of the fact that people want to have a beautiful, golden coloured skin. Another point is that, since there is so much dreadful information in the papers about the dangers of sun tanning, it is simple to understand why some people decide to try the sunless tanning route instead.

Which is where tanning booths, among other products, come into their own. However, having mentioned a few details and hazards, if you are still thinking about acquiring a sunless tan then you might be interested in reading the benefits of using a tanning booth. The first benefit is that you can get a tan whenever you like. The second benefit is that the tanning booths take up less room than tanning beds as they stand in a vertical position.

Nevertheless, before you go out to purchase a tanning booth, it is a good idea if you read what other people have had to say about the items. If you still feel that tanning booths are the answer to your wishes, then there is a broad choice of tanning booths for you to consider.

Once you get your tanning booth installed in a spare room, you will never look back. The simplicity of use and being able to fit your tanning sessions in no matter what time of the day or night you like is of immeasurable advantage.

Tanning Bed Lamps

November 10th, 2009 Gail Jones No comments

Tanning bed lamps, as used in salon tanning beds, are a large part of the secret to the Hollywood tan. You can have any depth of tan you want with the wide range of bulbs available for tanning beds. There are deep-tanning lamps, bronzing bulbs, face lamps and plenty of others too. These high-tech bulbs utilize the best technology to tan you safely.

Furthermore, there are different kinds of bulbs for each type of skin too. The tanning bed industry produces different bulbs for from dark to light skin colours. On top of that, you can decide to have a soft tan, a golden tan, a bronze tan, or the deepest tan imaginable. You can even change the kind of bulb, as your tan deepens, so that you can have all kinds of quite amazing results.

A tanning lamp is like having the sun in a tube. In fact, it is even better! Modern tanning bed bulbs are made to the highest standards and are very safe. The sunbed industry and the government have set strict rules to ensure your safety. So, if you follow the instructions supplied with the product carefully, you can feel sure that you will not be risking your health to look good.

The UV rays they emit are well within prescribed safety limits to ensure you remain healthy and tanned. Furthermore, there are plenty of choices open to you, ranging from UVB and UVA combinations to pure UVA. It is your choice! So, why not get a little extra tan?

Tanning bulbs are ultraviolet-emitting units that act as the main element of the various kinds of tanning beds and booths on the market. Tanning bed lamps have as their main use the enhancement of a cosmetic tan, although these lamps also have a reputation for the successful treatment of eczema and psoriasis. The depth and colour of the tan produced, depends on the spectrum of light created by the tanning lamps and the overwhelming majority of them give out more ultraviolet light than the sun does.

Nearly all tanning lamps use a device called a ‘ballast’ to regulate their power consumption. The ballast stabilizes the flow of electrical energy inside the lamp and is required to make sure that the lamps use only the exact amount of wattage that they need in order to work effectively.

There are different types of tanning bulbs on the market including reflector sunbed bulbs and high output lamps. The majority of lamps fall into two main categories: high pressure and low pressure types. (Within the tanning industry, it is customary to refer to high pressure tanning lamps as bulbs and low pressure tanning bulbs as lamps). Both high and low pressure tanning bulbs have a lack of oxygen in its housing.

High pressure tanning bulbs range in length from three to five inches and operate with 250 to 2,000 watt ballasts, 400 watt high pressure tanning bulbs are the most common. They are usually included in the face tanning component of a tanning bed. High pressure tanning bulbs are made of quartz glass and an additional specialized coating, which is necessary to filter out potentially deadly UVC ultraviolet rays.

HP tanning bulbs contain a small amount of mercury or argon and create ultraviolet light in high amounts. The handling of high pressure tanning bulbs should be performed very carefully and never with naked hands, because even a tiny amount of oil from your hands can cause the bulb to fail prematurely or even crack and the resultant spillage of mercury is potentially very serious. High pressure tanning bulbs ought to be replaced after about 1,000 hours even though they will continue to produce light for up to 10,00 hours

Low pressure tanning lamps are very similar to normal fluorescent tubes, but the glass tube of low pressure tanning bulbs naturally filters out the harmful UVC ultraviolet rays. Low pressure bulbs have a useful lifespan of between 600 and 1,600 hours with 1,000 hours being the usual again.

One of the most well-liked vacations is being on the beach, soaking up the sun’s rays to get a tan and a warm glow and individuals continue to do it, in spite of admonishings of the hazards of melanoma or skin cancer.

Tanning Lamps

November 8th, 2009 Gail Jones No comments

There are a number of sun bed lamps in each sun bed on the market. When you are getting a new, or especially a used or older tanning bed, make a good examination of the lamps. Make sure that they are proper tanning lamps and meet the FDA guidelines with regard to health and safety. You should also consider how difficult it is to get at the lamps. Make sure that the lamps are not difficult to change when necessary. It is quite important, and a lot cheaper, if you can carry out such routine maintenance yourself, if you buy a home sun bed.

There are two completely different types of lamps used in low pressure and high pressure beds. Ensure you get the right tanning bed lamps for your sun bed, because you cannot use any bulbs you like. If you are ordering replacement bulbs on the Internet, check the make and model of your existing bulbs carefully. Ensure that the lamps you are buying are made for your bed.

High Pressure Bulbs: high pressure beds use quartz lamps in a variety of sizes. The gases inside these lamps have a pressure that is slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The lamps in these beds are located in the hood of the bed, so that you tan from above only. When you have tanned the skin on one side of your body for about 10-12 minutes, you turn over and tan the other side. The bed of these devices is much more comfortable than a conventional sun bed.

The biggest advantage of these bulbs is the short time you have to spend on the bed. Since you tan faster, you need to spend less time in the salon, which means it works out cheaper. You can achieve the level of tan you want in about three weeks of three to five sessions a week. With a conventional bed, it would take you at least a month to achieve the same level of colour. Maintaining your tan is much easier too. You only need two or three sessions a month to maintain the colour, compared with that many sessions every week on a low pressure bed. Many of these lamps produce UVA rays only, not UVB rays which are responsible for burning.

Conventional Sun Bed Bulbs: Conventional, or low pressure beds use long tube lamps that look like household fluorescent tubes. The lamps are located above and below the bed of the sun bed, which means that all the body parts are tanned at the same time, without the need to change positions during the session.

Conventional beds use UVA and UVB rays in varying mixes. Some use both and others use mostly UVA with a bit of UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for the (premature) ageing effects on the skin and UVB rays are the burning rays that produce sunburn when you are outside in the sun. It is very important to discover which type of rays your tan bed emits. You must be sure to replace your existing bulbs with comparable new lamps after about 1,000 hours of use.

Another factor when selecting the type of bed you use at home or in the salon, is the tanning bed lotion you will use. Different lotions are better for each type of bed. The owner of your tanning salon can help you choose a lotion that will work for the bed you are using and your skin type. Regardless of the bed you are using, you should certainly always use a lotion. Lotions help you tan more quickly and moisturise your skin at the same time.

Starlux 2940: Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Technologies

October 23rd, 2009 Calvin Jai No comments

Fractional laser skin resurfacing aficionados will be hearing more and more about the Starlux 1540, Starlux 2940, Fraxel Repair, ActiveFX, DeepFX, and Fractional Skin Rejuvenation in the future.

Understanding the history of fractional laser treatments and C02 laser ablation treatments provide a good foundation when looking at what’s here in cosmetic medicine regarding fractional treatments, and what’s coming next.

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacings Previous Technologies

Fraxel was the first on the scene with a non-ablative fractional laser for the cosmetic medical market. Fraxel has been upgraded and has been improved on by a number of other competing fractional laser skin resurfacing technologies including the Lumenis DeepFX and ActiveFX, and Palomar Medicals Starlux 1540, and Starlux 2940.

Laser skin rejuvenation is a rapidly advancing field that intersects cosmetic dermatology and traditional plastic surgery. Rapid advancements and new breakthroughs in technology are occurring frequently and will continue. The benefit for patients is an increase in the effectiveness of fractional laser treatments and less down time or potential side effects.

Fractional laser technologies new applications are expanding into associated cosmetic areas like skin tightening where fractional treatments compete with radio frequency treatments like Thermage, and eventually into fat and cellulite treatments and removal.

Old, full face CO2 laser resurfacing treatments to treat wrinkles using the Ultra pulse CO2 laser, now compare poorly when faced with new fractional laser technologies. CO2 laser resurfacing created a very traumatic “burn wound” that literally vaporized the top layers of the dermis and took many months of recovery in addition to the need for general anesthesia. The additional problem of the skin turning white with hypo pigmentation as the pigment cells were destroyed fair poorly as well. Because of the risk of negative side effects, few patients choose this procedure.

The Newest Fractional Skin Resurfacing & Rejuvenation Technologies

Within the last few years, cosmetic Fractional Skin Rejuvenation or Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing has evolved and eliminated many of the existing technologies shortcomings. The erbium laser used in the newest Starlux is ‘fractionated’ into tiny micro-lasers, treating only a small portion of the skin (think tiny pin pricks) and leaving surrounding skin intact, greatly improving healing.

The ‘fractionated’ treatment areas called micro-treatment zones, cause enough injury to the skin to trigger new collagen production and is used to replace collagen damaged by aging and sun exposure. The new collagen that is produced ‘fills in’ or ‘plumps up’ the underlying tissue and smoothes out skin wrinkles. The untreated skin between the micro treatment zones speeds the healing process to a mere 3-4 days and leaves most of the pigment cells intact, preventing hypo pigmentation.

Starlux 1540: Palomars New Fractional Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing Technology

The Fraxel and Starlux1540 are non ablative lasers (ablate means to “surgically remove) which means that the skin is not removed by the laser, rather the laser beam instantly heats the skin, causing inflammation and new collagen growth.

Results for wrinkle removal and skin tightening are less dramatic than with ablative lasers, but the benefit of reduced recovery time and fewer side effects are mean that non ablative laser treatments are often the patients first choice.

Starlux 2940: Fractional Ablative Laser Resurfacings Future

Starlux 2940 fractional ablative lasers now provide the benefits of fractional treatments (less down time and reduced complications) with ablative skin resurfacings benefits (better wrinkle removal and facial rejuvenation) offering patients the best of both worlds.

These newer fractional ablative lasers remove the tissue in the micro treatment zone rather than just heating it as is done with the old Fraxel and the Starlux 1540.

The benefit of Starlux 2940 fractional ablative laser treatments is that a greater amount of wrinkled and sun damaged skin can be removed than with the older laser technologies, and with a better medical result. There is some minor increase in recovery time with redness for around 5-6 days. Still, the Starlux 2940 fractional ablative lasers require much less recovery time than the old non fractional erbium and CO2 ablative lasers.

Competing Fractional Laser Technologies

Reliant: (the company that makes Fraxel) CO2 fractional laser called Repair

Lumenis: CO2 fractional ablative lasers; ActiveFX & DeepFx

Palomar: Starlux 2940 – Erbium fractional ablative skin resurfacing laser.

Protecting Your Medical Spa Online

October 12th, 2009 Kylie J. Peterson No comments

Is click fraud costing your skin clinic? If you’re one of the tens of thousands of cosmetic medical practices, skin clinics and medical spas advertising online with Google Adwords, it’s likely that at least some of the money you’re paying every month is sucked out of your marketing fund by click fraud.

The practice of “click fraud” began in the early days of the Internet’s popularity with software programs that automatically surfed Web sites to increase traffic figures. This led companies to develop policing technologies touted as antidotes to the problem. (Some marketing executives estimate that up to 20 percent of fees in certain advertising categories continue to be based on nonexistent consumers in today’s search industry.)

You can be sure that it’s already happening to your skin clinic, med spa or laser clinic? Here’s a quote from Michael Caruso, CEO of click fraud services vendor ClickFacts in an interview:

“In particularly fraud prone verticals such as finance, class action lawsuits and medical, we see click fraud rates in the 30-45 perecent range. These are all categories that see high keyword pricing in the auction model. That makes them particularly tasty for click fraud artists. “If you can make more money from the dark side than the light side of search, there are plenty of people who will take advantage. Plus, it’s not even technically illegal yet.”

There are two main ways that your skin clinics and medical spas marketing budget is being drained by click fraud:

First: your laser clinics and med spas competitors who see your ad simply click on it, draining your advertising dollars. Second; click fraudsters set up ‘affiliate’ sites are set up that run medical spas ads where they are clicked on by bots or employees. These sites are the most damaging since you’re paying for every click without any return at all. Click fraud around skin clinics, med spas or laser clinics can be very lucrative since dermatology or plastic surgery clinics are becoming such a competitive market and the payment per click can be as high as $4-6.

Unfortunately, to keep your budget safe you have very few tools. Google just gave advertisers $90 million to compensate for click fraud as the result of a class action suit but you can bet they’re not that Google’s not interested in your individual account. Especially since they’re making money from click fraud when your ads are clicked on.

Start by limiting your skin clinics exposure. If your dermatology or plastic surgery clinic is still running an Adwords or Yahoo campaign, they allow you to limit the maximum amount you spend in a day. Take advantage of this feature by limiting your maximum cost to what you can afford to spend. You can also look for the tracks of click fraud by examining the reports you might have available to you. Multiple clicks coming from the same IP address are a sure sign of fraud.

(Malaysia has become such a haven for click fraud around medspas and IPL laser treatments.)

If you’re going to run ppc ads it’s up to you to protect your skin clinic, med spa or laser clinic.
