Ninety percent of all teenagers have acne, and it, also, affects 25 percent of all adults. There is no known cure for acne, but it can be treated and controlled. Psychologically, acne is a stubborn skin disorder that causes embarrassment for those who have it. Here are seven tips about acne that you need to know.

Usually acne is caused because the sebaceous glands produce too much oil. A pimple begins two to three weeks before it actually shows on the face. The sebaceous glands work deep within the pores to produce the oil that your skin needs to stay moist and pliable. While this is going on, the skin is replenishing itself and new cells are being formed.

Normally the old cells mix with the oil and slough off. In some people these dead cells don’t slough, but become sticky and form a plug that traps bacteria and oil inside of the pore. The sebaceous glands continue to form more oil causing the pore to swell, and eventually form a pimple that shows on the face.

If you have acne, you may have oily hair. Wash your hair at least every other day to keep the oil and dirt on it from touching the skin on your face. Be sure to pull your hair back away from your face.

It’s best to keep your hands away from your face. Your hands have bacteria on them from things that you touch. Even though you may wash them often, you can never get rid of all of the bacteria. You don’t want to risk getting an infection on your face.

Don’t pop your pimples. You run the risk of them getting infected or becoming scars that will be hard to get rid of. When they begin to form, put a drop of aloe vera gel on them, and they will dry up and go away.

Did you know that makeup can make your acne worse because it clogs the skin’s pores? Even if you are embarrassed for others to see how you look, it is best not to use it at all if it isn’t necessary. The best thing you can do for your face is keep it clean and keep it free from any foreign substance.

Consult a doctor who specializes in acne if it is affecting you psychologically. They can teach you how to deal with it so that it doesn’t cause extra stress in your life. They are, also, knowledgeable about the different kinds of treatments for acne, and they can recommend the one that will work best for you.

If you have a problem with acne, learn all you can about its causes and the different treatments that are available. The more you know, the more you will be able to control it.
